Accessing and using the archive

The Festival staff at the Victoria Eugenia Theatre Press Office (1968) San Sebastian International Film Festival Archive [+]

The material conserved in the historical archive of the San Sebastian Film Festival that has not been digitized can be consulted in the Basque Film Library. Appointments must be made in advance and under the following conditions:

In-person consultations are restricted to users who accredit a link to teaching or research activity. The definition of ‘research project’ includes higher-level academic studies or research studies related to cinematographic and creative projects.

Consult the collections that make up the Archive of the San Sebastian Film Festival here.

Users should previously consult the online catalogue to locate material of interest to them. Requests for telematic consultation or reproduction will not be dealt with, except in the case of special consultations.

Once the material for consultation has been located, users should contact us to:

  • Justify the purpose of the research for the consultation and accredit their institutional affiliation.
  • Describe in detail the type of documentation they wish to consult.
  • Make an appointment. No users will be attended to without an appointment.

Consultations will be made in the Basque Film Library (Filmoteca Vasca), located in the Tabakalera building (Plaza de las Cigarreras 1, 2nd floor, 20012 Donostia-San Sebastián, Spain).

Consultation hours: Wednesday to Friday from 10:00 to 14:00.

During the celebration of the San Sebastian International Film Festival, the Artxiboa premises will remain closed and requests for in-person consultations will not be served. The Artxiboa portal will continue to offer access to both the online catalogue and the digital collections.

  • Users may only work with a maximum of 10 boxes of documents at the same time. No digitized material can be used for in-person consultations.
  • Archive material must not leave the consultation room of the Basque Film Library under any circumstances.
  • No liquids, food, biros or felt tip pens are allowed in the consultation area (only pencils). Uses can leave their personal belongings in the lockers provided.
  • Nitrile gloves will be given to users. They must be worn when handling photographs or transparencies. In the case of material in paper format gloves need not be used, although users should wash and dry their hands before handling it in a consultation.
  • The Archive team may provide users with further instructions on the handling of documentation during their visit.
  • Users may take photographs of any documents they wish, but without using flash photography or forcing the material in such a way that it may suffer damage.
  • The San Sebastian Film Festival will not provide a document reproduction service or provide users with photocopiers or scanners.
  • Any later public use of the documents should be notified to the San Sebastian Film Festival and the rules of use should be observed, correctly documenting their origin (San Sebastian Film Festival Archive).

Special consultations should be approved by the Academic Committee of the San Sebastian Film Festival Archive. After filling in the contact form and sending it, users will receive a reply within 10 calendar days. The following are considered special consultations:

  • Consultations of the Administrative Archive (material from the General Archive that is less than 15 years old).
  • Consultation of material from the Historical Archive that has not been conditioned and/or catalogued.
  • Consultation of material which, due to its state of conservation or any other consideration, requires the supervision of specialised personnel.
  • Requests related to the loan or production of reproductions of material for public dissemination (exhibitions, publications, media, films, etc.).
  • Consultations that require the clarification of issues related to data protection or author’s rights.
