An attitude of defection.

The gesture that changed the course of the San Sebastián Film Festival (1976)

Following the death of the dictator, the Basque people took to the street to reclaim the rights stolen from them over three decades of repression. The year 1976 opened with a general strike and with the highest offensive ever meted out in the territory against the working class when, on 3 March, five workers assembled lost their lives in Gasteiz, riddled with the bullets of the Francoist police force. In Gipuzkoa, on the eve of the 24th San Sebastián Festival, the Civil Guard killed the worker Josu Zabala Erasun, aged 24, while dispersing a pro-amnesty demonstration denouncing the disappearance of Eduardo Moreno Bergaretxe “Pertur”.

With a territory in mourning demanding the cancellation of all celebrations, the San Sebastián Festival —with its reputation in tatters following an edition held during a state of emergency and hit by myriad local and international desertions in protest against the regime’s latest death sentences— continued to implement its policy of inhibition and ambiguity, announcing the stars who would walk the red carpet in a city under police occupation.

50 years later, this exhibition focuses on a gesture in the shape of a letter, which would bring irreversible consequences for the future of the Festival: given the failure of the event to take action in view of the mass demonstrations, going no further than to cancel the gala aspect of its events, the producer Elías Querejeta informed them, backed by the entire team, that he was withdrawing the film El desencanto (Jaime Chávarri) from the Official Selection. As a counterpoint, the announcement resulting from the urgent meeting held by the Governing Board denouncing the “attitude of defection” of Querejeta and of all those following in his wake.

Telegrams of solidarity and withdrawal announcements poured in at a dizzying rate, shaking the Festival’s anti-democratic structures: journalists stopped reporting and left the city en masse. The competing Spanish films condemned the screening of their films in support of the team of El desencanto. The Neighbours’ Association, which would play a crucial part in bringing greater democracy to the competition months later, condemned the institutional manoeuvres of moving the event to another city.

Given the unremitting noise, in November 1976, the Ministry of Information and Tourism relieved the Festival management of its duties and returned the event, 23 years later, to the city of its origin, opening one of the most ebullient periods of upheaval and experimentation in its history. This exhibition places the accent on the voices that emerged from that convulsive edition and which, settling the score with a painful past, anticipated a new horizon for the San Sebastián Film Festival.

Arnegu-jarrera.

Donostia Zinemaldiaren norakoa aldatu zuen keinua (1976)

Diktadorea hil ondoren, euskal herritarrek kaleak hartu zituzten errepresioz betetako hiru hamarkadatan lapurtutako eskubideak aldarrikatzeko. 1976a greba orokorrarekin hasi zen, eta lurraldean langile-klasearen aurka bizitako erasorik handienari bide eman zion horrek. Martxoaren 3an, asanbladan bildutako bost langile erail egin zituen Gasteizen polizia frankistak, tiroka. Gipuzkoan, Donostia Zinemaldiaren 24. edizioaren bezperan, Guardia Zibilak Josu Zabala Erasun 24 urteko langilea hil zuen amnistiaren aldeko manifestazio batean, Eduardo Moreno Bergaretxeren (“Pertur”) desagerpena salatzeko.

Ospakizun oro bertan behera uztea erreklamatzen zuen lurralde bat doluan zegoela, Donostia Zinemaldiak, kontuan izanik izen ona zikinduta zuela, aurretik salbuespen-egoeran egin baitzuen edizioa eta erregimenaren azken heriotza-zigorrak salatzeko tokiko zein nazioarteko boikotak egin baitziren, bere inhibizio- eta anbiguotasun-politikarekin jarraitu eta polizia-indarrek hartutako hiri baten alfonbra gorrian desfilatuko zuten izarrak iragarri zituen.

50 urte geroago, gutun-itxurako keinu batean jarri du fokua erakusketa honek; Zinemaldiaren etorkizunerako ondorio atzeraezinak ekarriko zituenak: Zinemaldiak manifestazio jendetsuen aurrean izandako gelditasunaren aurrean, bere harrerei gala-izaera kenduz (hori bakarrik), Elías Querejeta ekoizleak jakinarazi zuen, bere lantalde osoaren babesarekin, Sail Ofizialetik El desencanto (Jaime Chávarri) filma kenduko zuela. Kontraplano gisa, Zinemaldiaren Zuzendaritza Batzordearen premiazko bileraren akta dugu, Querejetaren eta haren jarrerari jarraitzen zion beste edonoren «arnegu-jarrera» salatzen zuena.

Bata bestearen atzetik, Zinemaldiaren egitura antidemokratikoak zalantzan jartzen zituzten elkartasun-telegramak eta Zinemalditik alde egiteko abisuak iritsi ziren: kazetariek, bere jarduera eten ondoren, hiritik irtengo ziren. Lehian zeuden film espainiarretako taldeek film horien emankizuna gaitzetsi zuten El desencanto filmeko ekipoaren alde. Auzokideen Elkarteak —berebiziko garrantzia izango zuenak hilabete batzuk geroago Zinemaldiaren demokratizazioan—  ekitaldia beste hiri batera eramateko maniobrak salatu zituen.

Zarata eutsiezin hura ikusirik, Informazio eta Turismo Ministerioak, 1976ko azaroan (lehenengoz 23 urtean), Zinemaldiaren kudeaketa askatu eta jatorrizko hirira itzuli zuen, bere historiako haustura eta esperimentazio mugimendurik handieneko etapari hasiera emanez. Erakusketa honek edizio nahasi hartatik sortutako ahotsak nabarmentzen ditu, iragan mingarriarekin kontuak atera eta Donostia Zinemaldirako etorkizun berri bat proiektatu zutenak.
